Those of us close to the Hilton Head Airport scene can only shake our heads in wonder over the lack of initiative displayed by Beaufort County Council in allowing the Builder’s Choice Lumber property of 4.1 acres immediately adjacent to the south end of the runway to negligently slip through their fingers.

This debacle has to be laid directly at the feet of Beaufort County Council Chairman Weston Newton for he had ample time to purchase the property at a fair price..

The FAA was aware this property was available as it is within the “Airport Protection Zone” The FAA was ready and willing to fund 95% of the $1,7 million purchase price, the SC Department of Commerce/ Division of Aeronautics would have funded 2.5% leaving Beaufort County to pay a measly $42,500 for this vastly important, adjacent airport land.

What’s going on here?. Mr., Newton, you stood on the sidelines in the LMO fight and refused to declare against this anti airport ordinance. You cited having to work with Mayor Peeples on too many projects and now under your watch this valuable property is lost. Did you kow tow to him again?  Remember, when you were elected you were to represent us. A public accounting is certainly in order as to why you let this property slip away, Why were there no hearings on it? Did you think no one would notice? Beaufort County is the airport owner and should fight for its betterment. A public explanation now, please.
